Eclipses

A solar eclipse, not to be confused with a lunar eclipse, is a phenomenon that occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. In a total solar eclipse, the sun is almost completely blacked out. All that you can see in the sky is a "ring of fire" that is only just a great show of the sun's photosphere, the outermost layer of the star. In a partial solar eclipse the sun is only, well, partially, blocked out by the moon. A lunar eclipse is basicly the opposite. It occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon casting a shadow over it. In a partial lunar eclipse Earth's shadow doesn't completely cover the Moon reavealing a sliver of white. In a total lunar eclipse, Earth's shadow is cast completely cast over the Moon. For a few minutes you can not seee the slightest bit of the moon. Then it emerges from behind the dark shadow.

Non-Newtonian Liquids

A non-newntonian liquid is a mass that has all the properties of a solid and a liquid. One, easy-to-make, fun non-newtonian liquid shown here is cornstarch and water. All you need is:
1. 1 box of cornstarch
2. 1 1/2 cups of water
All you do is:
1. pour approx. a 1/4 of the cornstarch and a fluid ounce of water in a large mixing container
2. mix it until no more cornstarch is visible
3. repeat 1. and 2. until there are no more ingredents left
There should be a thick gooey substance. skim your finger across it. It feels like a solid. Now punch it. It still feels like a solid. Now look at it carefully. It looks like a solid. Now rest your hand on the surface. It feels like a liquid. Try picking it up. A solid. Now let it drip off your hand. A liquid. Try other things.

New Years Eve Blue Moon

A blue moon occurs every 2 1/2 years but, it occurs on New Years Eve every 19 years, that's right every 19 years. 2009 is one of them.

Star Party June 2009

Our family have been members of the Astronomy Club of Santa Clarita Valley, called "The Local Group", for about a year now and have not attended one of their Star Parties, until tonight!

We packed up our telescope that we purchased at a garage sale for $20 and drove out to Vasquez Rocks to meet up with the club. There were quite a few people there with some very elaborate telescopes. We were thankful to run into 'El Presidente' Steve, who helped us set up our telescope for an AWESOME view of the moon! Several others had great views of Saturn.
It was a wonderful time and we will definitely go again!

Neil Armstrong

You all know Neil as the first person to walk on the moon. Well, it's true, he was.

Here's his whole story:

One Sunday of 1936 six-year-old Neil Armstrong had an extrodanary experience...

...his first plane ride. It was in a plane called a Tin Goose (Ford trimotor).

After that Neil wanted to fly, fly, and fly everywhere. He even got his pilots lisence before his drivers lisence-- WOW-- his pilot's lisence was one of his 16th birthday presents!

Neil won a schollarship forPurdue University in Indiana. the US NAVY paid for ALL his education. In return he joined the military.

In the Korean war he accidently flew into a trap set by the koreans. The tip of the wing broke off but he safly landed the plane anyway. His work in the Korean war earned him 3 metals and the name The pilot that can handle all kinds of danger.

The Great Mars Hoax

An email circulating annually since 2003 claims that Mars will come close enough to Earth to look as large as the moon does with the naked eye. Not true.

This hoax began from a true situation: in August 2003, Mars came as close to the Earth as it had in 60,000 years. Through a moderately powered telescope, Mars would have appeared about the same size as the moon does with the naked eye.

The part about the "moderately powered telescope" was somehow dropped and the story spread that one could look into the night skies -- this year's email claimed it would happen on August 27, 2009 -- and see a red planet that rivaled the moon in its size.

In the actual 2003 event, Mars appeared about three time its normal size with the naked eye -- that is, it looked like a very, very bright star.

Every 15 to 17 years, Mars comes almost as close to Earth as it did in 2003, the next time being in 2018. But it will never appear as large as the moon to the unaided eye. If it did, we'd be in big trouble, as its gravitational pull would be so great, its effects on the tides would be unimaginable.

Water on mars

On Thursday, July 31st, 2008, scientists discovered water on the planet Mars! They knew it was water because they heated up the ice and it melted at 0 degrees Celsius(32 degrees F). On August 2nd or 3rd, 2008, they figured out that because of the gases that evaporated out of the water, the water was very poisionous because of the chemicals in it.

Uranus

Uranus is a sidways ringed planet. Earlier today I was thinking it would be awesome if NASA planned a manned misson and I was the first person to step foot on Uranus. Unfortunately Uranus is gas so, I can not step foot on Uranus.

1,000,000 Earths could fit inside the sun!!!!

The sun is an advridged sized star with 1,000,000,000s of things orbiting it.

Earthquakes can be one of the strongest and most deadliest forces in nature.

Some of Saturn's moons orbit inside the rings.

Three of Saturn's rings are naned A, B, and C-- not inspiering!

Jupitar has 63 known moons.

One of its moons called Io is the most volcanic place in the solar system; another one of its moons called Eropa is completly the opposite it has water ice with only water underneth.

Mercury is the smalest globe

'thoe it's the closest planet to the Sun; its night time tempeture can get as low as -280 degrees F

This year Kilauea erupted rocks for the first time in 100 years; since then it has been blowing out steam.
